Window Screens

Curious how everyone deals with window screens? Do you prefer to take them out outside or from the inside? What about screens that are ripped or torn?

It depends on a lot of factors. Some screens must be removed from the inside. If we are doing an exterior only cleaning and the screens must be unlocked from inside then the customer must take them off and put them back on. If a screen is fragile them be careful with it. If they are torn let the customer know beforehand and take pics with your camera phone for documentation.

Depends if there are latches, pins or neither. Also depends on the window. On a triple track aluminum you will have to remove from the inside, same with any latched or pinned screen, no if there are no latches or pins, you can apply tension to one side (usually where the metal ribbons are, and remove them from the outside on ground level. If a customer is not picky, we remove screens from the inside. Putting them back in might have to be done from the outside. I been lucky enough to put them back in the window from the inside if they have those metal bars in the middle you can softly hold on. Saves a lot of time with using a ladder to putting screens back in especially when it’s 2-3 stories up.

Good points! Camera is going to be essential! Thanks for the advice!

We try to take them out from the outside , but if we are using the wfp then we take them out from the inside. Really all depends on the height of the home and style of the screens. Ripped or torn screens still have to be removed just may not be cleaned due to their condition.

For the most part, I take all screens off from the inside, especially if on the 2nd floor. Some can be taken off from the exterior. If the screens are very filthy, I still take them off from the inside but try to set them down on the outside, afterwards I collect them from the outside. The reason being to prevent as much debris as possible from getting in the house, especially if carpeted. As far as tears or rips, no different, just let the customer know about it so they don’t think it was you who tore them.
