What is considered a "Window"

I was wondering, what is considered a window? Pane to Pane, Frame to Frame? Or the opening in the building that the glass is in. I see opening that has a window in it, but it has 3 pieces of glass, all framed out., and is a 12 lite French door considered 1 or 12 windows.
Thank you

I use the frame to frame unless it is a window wall and has silicone dividing the glass. French door would be 12 window panes for me.

A window can have multiple panes. A double hung window has two panes. A window can have a lot of cutups which is a pain.

I see what you did the

It really does depend. Like others said frame to frame unless cut ups.

So @Luke, when you have your estimate videos, I know for a double hung window that opens up and down you count as one window. Do you charge a window that opens side to side as one window as well?

Another question, do you guys quote small businesses (not a store front, like a standalone dental office) the same as you would quote a store front? A lot of dental offices and medical offices around my parts are more like houses, I don’t charge what I do for residential, but wanted your input.

I charge by the pane. It makes my life easy (for me) and also tells me how long it’ll take. Double hung $6 x 2. Casement $6. Big picture window maybe $12.

For businesses with residential windows on them… it depends on the level of service they want. You’re probably not washing screens and you’re trying to get them on a 2 week or 4 week schedule. So you could split the difference between storefront and residential.

Charge by the pane, not the window. I tell customers that a pane is any pc of glass framed on all sides. And if they want to give me the count, I tell them to count while looking at the house from the outside. It’;s the easiest way to get an accurate count. If they are just sitting in their living room and visualizing the windows in each room, for sure they’re gonna miss a few. From the outside looking at the 4 sides of the house should take 5 mins tops to get an accurate count.

Thanks, that helps quite a bit.

Thank you for the detailed response, it helps a lot.

I’ve noticed that most window cleaners have different systems of pricing. When I charge six dollars for window someone else might charge four or eight. The first guy whoever taught me charges each time he hast to move his latter as well. My system of charging ended up being quite a bit different from his but we would still end up quoting the same jobs within about 10 or $15 of each other. What I recommend is to have in mind what you want to make per hour on the job, and keep track of each job you do. If you are below your desired hourly rate, then you might consider increasing your prices.
