Washing Scrims/Microfibers

Hello!

Just started window cleaning so sorry for the newbie questions!

Basically, sometimes after I wipe the edges of a window, my Scrims/microfiber cloths get black marks all over them. I’ve washed them at 60degrees and theirs still marks on them… I don’t use any tablet or fabric softener as heard it’s not very good and can water proof them type thing?

How do you wash yours and get the marks out?

Also today I first tried using 0000 steel wool after learning about it from Luke’s videos (very helpful btw, thanks!) And what a massive difference they make!! However after doing it today for the first time I had so much more black water dripping after squeeging it made my cloths even worse! Is the black water from really dirty windows or is that normal for 0000 steel wool?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Steven

The marks are there to stay😁 all my towels are full of black marks, doesn’t matter how you wash them. Don’t worry just clean them in washing machine after you use them.

Just make sure the steel wool is not rusting that could be why the water is darker. Rust can scratch. But as for the towels those marks are there to stay.

Ahhh ok, thank you! It wouldn’t of been rust as that was a brand new steel wool that time so I’m assuming really dirty windows! Thanks for the replies!

This is why we use the blue huck towels for all new/irregular work.
Big scrims are great for route work/regular work/homes with good window frame seals.
You can bust thru 10 shopfronts with the one scrim. :+1:

Btw, keep in mind that if you’re wet scrubbing with steel wool, it does start to rust super quick. I can usually get through a whole house with one but it can drip a lot of residue right from the start. Be sure to mop, scrub with wool, mop again, then squeegee. That’s what I do at least.

Mine are all marked up. It is no problem they still work great.

Yup! Black marks all over and there to stay! I use microfiber towels and as dirty as they seem as long as you wash them, keep them out of the dryer, they work great!

Thank you guys, seems I’m doing it right. Literally just using hot wash with just water and hang drying! Thanks for all your input!

For what reason do you not use a dryer? I put mine in the dryer without any dryer sheets or softener and they come out just fine. Just curious.

Yeah the marks are from the rubber gaskets and some from filth. The steel wool shouldnt be leaving black water behind. Usually rusted steel wool will leave almost a brown color water.

Maybe without the dryer sheets it makes it alright but in my ecperience I found that putting microfiber towels in the dryer causes them to lose their effect…it could just be me lol but I’ve always let them air dry and they always did the job just fine! Maybe to save some time I’ll try your way without any fleecy sheets!

Oh yeah, I think it works fine. I did accidentally throw a dryer sheet in about a week ago and i did notice a negative difference. But without dryer sheets, it’s always worked fine for me.

Thank you all for your replies! No reason why I don’t tumble dry them, just I’ve seen on some forums people have said that it could make them deteriate alot quicker, unsure if it’s true though!

Do you also put it in the dryer afterward the washer or leave the scrim to air dry?

We throw ours in the dryer.

Sounds good, thanks!

Yes, in the dryer.

My MF from Costco is all marked up. I use oxiClean products along with my laundry detergent, and that help some. Make sure it is rinsed well for minimal residue.

As for detailing, you can using sea sponge and wipe all the edges and trimming before using the squeegee. That will minimize detailing and keep towels somewhat cleaner. not always though.
