Walking on roof tiles

How do you access windows like this without damaging the roof tiles?

I’ve only ever walked on shingles and metal roofs and have no experience with anything like this.

I’m sure you will get a lot of knowledgeable expert advice from different replies here but I would check some YouTube videos.

Thanks

I’ve watched a few, but they seem to be from different climates with different building practices and materials.

These also don’t seem like terra-cotta or concrete, but maybe like a rubber type material. I’m only going by what I’m seeing from the ground.

I’ll keep looking.

As far as I know you’re supposed to walk on the back part of which ever tiles you are stepping on, the part that is secured down. And just walk very gently.

I’ve personally never come across a rubber shingle that mimic clay tiles, but it may be a coated steel roofing tile.

If it is, its a lightweight metal roofing coated with a rubberized spray. Shouldn’t be a problem to walk on as long as you avoid pressure points on the high points. Otherwise it should be pretty durable. climb up and have a feel at them. See if they give any on the low points to where you’d feel uncomfortable walking on it.

With that specific style of tile… you dont need to freak out about that since A) your being payed to clean the windows and you have to walk on them anyway to access the windows… so don’t feel pressured about it. But simply step in the middle slopes center that is bolted down… try to avoid the top part because that could crack depending on your weight and climate.

I had to tackle this recently so I did some research of my own: came across this handy article that has some informational photos:
How to Walk on a Concrete Tile Roof | Lyons Roofing Blog

Here’s some info from the post:

“Most concrete tiles are lifted a little off of your roof and sit on wood batten strips, creating a gap under the tiles for ventilation. When you walk on your roof, make sure you are walking on the reinforced part—the lower third of the visible tile where tiles overlap.”

“Also, walk on the peaks of the tile, not the valleys.”

Hopefully that helps answer some questions for people out there. I’m paranoid about cracking tiles as that could be some water damage down the road for your client.

The smaller windows look like side cranks, if so, do it all from inside.
