Tint Removal

Hello,

I keep seeing that some of you guys remove tint, yet I don’t see you making any videos for it, are there any tricks or concerns to getting it removed?

Cheers

That would have helped me recently. Took forever to de-tint a window my first time. I hope there is a more efficient way of doing it.

Hey @Neil! We dont have any videos for tint removal. We have done it for customers, but its not a service that we market for. Its a pain in the butt.

The last time I did it for a customer, it was 3 sliding glass door sets. I sprayed the glass with ammonia and water and then put a black plastic trash bag on the glass. The water and ammonia made the trash bag cling to the glass and the heat from the sun and ammonia loosened the tint so I was able to peel the majority off. The rest was done with a heat gun and a Triumph scraper. Very tedious and messy work.

@Sonlight
Triumph scraper for the win. I’ll have to try that strategy with ammonia. Do you just heat up the tint to scrape it off?

What would our guys charge for tint removal on a double hung screen and how long does it take on average?

Yeah that’s why we just prefer not doing it. We typically use a razor and goof off to loosen the adhesive

@Jacob I charged $20 per window pane. 3 sliding door sets = 6 windows at $20 was $120 and took about 2 hours. The dark plastic and ammonia will heat up and loosen the tint and the heat gun and scraper get the rest. You can use Oil Flo to get the remaining glue residue off the glass.

Excellent sir. Thank you for the advice, I will not let it go to waste.

I am curious about tint removal also. I have a steam cleaner that I like using for detailing vehicles. Would that work on removing the tint on restaurant glass? Love the price per pane by the way seems like a solid price.

We use oil-Flo and 6” scraper. We charge a minimum of 75.00 hour for tint removal. With a minimum charge of 125.00 regardless, for the visit. So if it was 2 windows and took 1 hour then it would be the minimum of 125.00. You need a minimum to show up, IMO in all work you’re doing.

How long do you let the oil-flo sit for?

Usually 5 minutes, maybe 10 if bad. This stuff works great, I put a towel under the window to catch any runs. Just did 8 frosted windows and they turned out great. Hope that helps.

Absolutely! Now where do you get oil flo from?

Windows 101, window cleaning supply company. You can get it at most any window cleaning supply company. It’s made by Titan Laboratories, they make a lot of chemicals that I use for window cleaning. Anyways… try them out.

One of my clients asks me to remove the tint from their windows about once per year. I keep telling them sorry, but that’s not the kind of work I’m interested in doing. They’re finally selling their home. Glad I didn’t attempt it!

If it was really not your type of work and you are being honest and genuine, then that was a good move. If you are not sold on something, you will never sell that service or product.

If there was even a doubt where its something or that you were scared of or maybe you didn’t feel comfortable because of lack of experience. Maybe it was also you had too much work to take on already. But if you run from a challenge and you even had 1% of you say “I think…I can” then you missed out on a learning experience. In fact, those were almost my exact words starting a window cleaning business. I used to hate anything that wasn’t single pane windows, now Im good with triple tracks, double panes, some storms, definitely single panes, all windows.

But I invited myself to fail and fail often. I enjoy failing because those moments in between you learn, force you to become the authority in your field, and one day you will become the top 1% of this industry. You will constantly fail learning something, and the next step above that is to say “I suck at this” which in reality means you don’t suck at it because you attempted it where someone else did not.

I always tell people “You are the absolute best individual for the job, because you beat everyone else in getting the job.” Even the best company in the world, cannot have ALL of the business, they have a good chunk but never ALL.

If I were you in that scenario and the situation was foreign to me, I would have gave it a shot. Again though, glad you dodged that bullet. But keep in mind what I said, you never know if you will like something that you are scared of. Martial arts was that for me as well, now I am 14 years in and still going. :sunglasses:

I will give it a shot, I use Glass Gleam 4 and Glass Gleam 3 sometimes with dawn. Thanks for the information!

So this past few days I have been on a Tint Removal for a restuarant. I called a auto tint manufacturer and they gave me great advice on removing tint off of plates of glass for reataurants. I purchased lemon scented ammonia from HD, and mixed Dawn, and Warm water in a spray bottle. The ratio is about 3 oz of dawn, a quarter cup of ammonia, and the rest is water in a chemical spray bottle. Spray liquid on tint to coat the window and let sit for 10 minutes. The tint came off and very little scraping afterwards. Finished with mopping the window with soap and lightly scraped of residue.

That’s great, glad it worked for you. Depending on the tint you might need other chemicals. I’ve done some fresher tint with my regular window cleaning solution, others I’ve had to use oil-flo. Amount of time on there makes a difference, type of tint, some use different adhesives that make it harder or easier to get off. That’s what makes tint removal tricky, you don’t always know what your getting into. Thanks for the share, for sure!
